HEATHER YOUNG
A B.F.A. Illustration alumni of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Heather Young Dolinar lives and works just outside of her hometown of Savannah, Georgia in a little city called Richmond Hill. A stalwart artist at the Photopoint Gallery, Heather draws much of her inspiration from her coastal roots and is madly in love with the South’s abundant and hopelessly romantic moss-draped live oak trees.
Her delicate pen and ink drawings explore both the linear elements of architecture and the more organic forms found in southern flora. She has drawn the sprawling branches of live oaks from all around the southeast, and her work can be found in collections both nationally and abroad.
While she enjoys the technical aspects of drawing, her heart lies in painting.
In 2019 she returned to the medium with a solo show at the Grand Bohemian Gallery appropriately entitled CANOPY. The exhibition introduced the world to her very unique oil wash painting technique. The captivating result comes from applying thin layers of paint to the entire surface, then carefully subtracts with erasers until she achieves a rich value—an almost fabric like effect. The contemporary result allows for a depth of color and surface texture, unlike traditional oil applications.
Heather Young’s work is currently on display at the Photopoint Gallery in the Arts on the Coast Annual Exhibit entitled SPACE. The gallery also features a number of Heathers ‘Oak Notes’ box sets and stunning pen and ink illustrations on paper and wood veneer.
