Artist Statement : “Back Roads” is, for me, a reflection of the Magnum Opus exhibit theme. I think every artist at one time or another feels a certain pressure to produce work that has mass appeal or that fits a certain style or to create something “safe”. This piece was initially created with none of these expectations from myself. “Back Roads” was initially created as a piece I intended to hang in my own home. I wanted to explore abstract painting in my own style, with my own meanings attached to that style. This piece represents community to me; the various ways people connect and relate to one another and the way our lives overlap. From my perspective this piece is my magnum opus because it was created from a place free from expectations, it has personal meaning and value and I also believe it can invite other viewers in to linger awhile and ascribe their own meaning based on their visual experience. I would be honored if selected to be apart of this exhibit. Thank you for your time and warmest regards.
